Phonics and Early Reading (Read Write Inc)

A C.I.T Academy school

Phonics and Early Reading (Read Write Inc)

The Government strongly recommend the use of synthetic phonics when teaching early literacy skills to children. Synthetic phonics is simply the ability to convert a letter or letter group into sounds that are then blended together into a word.

At GANF, we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to get our pupils off to a flying start with their reading. RWI is a method of learning based upon letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid pupils in their reading and spelling.

The RWI programme is split into three sets of sounds. Pupils are assessed and grouped regularly according to their current ability.

We want all pupils to begin their journey to read with confidence, develop a love of reading and apply their skills competently to writing.

We aim to ensure that pupils:

Decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills.

Read common exception words e.g. the, a, do, to, on sight.

Understand what they read.

Read aloud with fluency and expression.

Write confidently, with a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar.

Spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words.

Learn letter formation and handwriting skills.

The videos below taken from the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. website explains the overall scheme in more detail.
